Spar and Stokvel Talk Mark Human Rights Day in Soweto.

Human Rights Day is a time to reflect on dignity, equality, and access to basic needs but for many families in South Africa, the conversation starts with something as simple as putting food on the table.
While South Africa produces enough food at a national level, the real challenge lies at household level. Rising food prices, limited incomes, and ongoing economic pressure mean that for millions of families, putting a nutritious meal on the table is not guaranteed. In fact, an estimated 14 million South Africans experience food insecurity, with many forced to make difficult choices between food and other basic needs.
In communities across the country, however, resilience shows up in powerful ways. One of the clearest examples of this is the role stokvels continue to play. What began as savings groups have evolved into vital support systems that help members buy groceries in bulk, plan ahead, and ensure that no one in the group goes without.
It is this spirit of collective care that sits at the heart of SPAR’s approach to community. At SPAR, we understand that access to food is about more than availability, it is about affordability, accessibility, and dignity.
Through initiatives like the ongoing Stokvel Talk partnership, SPAR works closely with stokvel communities to share practical ways to stretch every rand, make smarter purchasing decisions, and ultimately improve household food security. These conversations are not once off, they are part of a sustained effort to listen and engage communities where it matters most.
As part of Human Rights Month, SPAR is bringing this partnership to life through a Stokvel Talk event in Soweto. Creating a space for connection, shared learning, and meeting communities where they are.
“Food plays such an important role in bringing families and communities together, but we know that for many, access is not always easy,” says Mpudi Maubane, National PR, Communications & Sponsorships Manager at SPAR. “Through Stokvel Talk, we are able to engage directly with communities, understand what matters most to them and be part of conversations that focus on practical, everyday solutions. Access to food is a basic human right and it’s important that we continue to work together to make that a reality.”
SPAR stores themselves also play an important role at community level. Whether it’s supporting local initiatives, responding in times of crisis, or simply ensuring that affordable, quality products are available every day, SPAR remains closely connected to the communities it serves.
Because at its core, food is about more than just nutrition. It is about dignity. It is about opportunity. And it is about ensuring that every person has the ability to live a full and healthy life.
This Human Rights Day, SPAR encourages all South Africans to reflect not only on the rights we celebrate, but on the role each of us can play in supporting one another. Because when communities come together and when businesses work hand-in-hand with the people they serve, real change becomes possible.
