As 2025 matriculants across the country celebrate their results, the cheers are even louder for learners supported by the Sci-Com Foundation. Once again, learners attending the foundation’s Saturday school have delivered outstanding performances in mathematics, physical science and life science, reflecting the impact of sustained support from Sun International and Carnival City over several years.
The Ekurhuleni-based NGO, sponsored by Carnival City and Sun International, attracts learners from areas including Tsakane, Kwa-Thema, Duduza, Gelusksdal and Wattville, who are enrolled in Grade 10 to ensure they are thoroughly prepared for their exams in their final year.
“For the 16th year in a row, Sci-Com learners have attained a 100% pass rate,” said project manager Freddy Nkopane. “Every learner that attended classes at Sci-Com Foundation passed their NSC examination in mathematics and science. We have raised the bar in terms of quality of results. Our learners attained more distinctions and university entrances (Bachelors).”
Thanks to the sponsorship of Sun International and Carnival City, special booklets of subject manuals and training notes were made and each learner attending the classes was given a copy for each subject in preparation for their 2025 NSC examinations.
Learners were transported via minibuses and buses from neighbouring townships to Brakpan High School where they could benefit from facilities aimed at making content delivery more practical and intensive. “Through the assistance of Sun International we were able to feed learners during breaks. Travelling costs were also covered, even for our highly trained tutors,” said Nkopane.
Mduduzi Madonsela, Socio Economic Development, Carnival City, said the sponsorship saw disadvantaged learners assisted with extra tuition. “Sci-Com bridges the gap between those schools that have resources, and those that don’t, and helps more learners pass matric with key skills in areas that South Africa desperately needs.”
Carnival City and Sun International’s generosity and the willingness to support youth from formerly disadvantaged backgrounds has made a significant difference in their lives, commented Heidi Edson, Sun International’s SED Manager.
Teaching will continue every Saturday and during school holidays in line with the vision of curriculum delivery.
