947 Ride Joburg highlights city’s world-class infrastructure

The City of Johannesburg successfully hosted the 28th edition of the 947 Ride Joburg road races, transforming its major routes into a premier cycling circuit that celebrated both endurance and urban innovation.

Held on Sunday, 26 October 2025, the event drew thousands of cyclists who took part in the 97km Road Race and 35km Short Ride — reaffirming Johannesburg’s reputation as a world-class sporting destination.

Executive Mayor Cllr Sello Dada Morero hailed the event as a powerful testament to the City’s ability to host international-calibre events. He noted that the race not only showcased Johannesburg’s robust cycling infrastructure but also promoted sustainable, non-motorised transport.

“The scale of this event, measured in thousands of participants, demonstrated Joburg’s capacity to host world-class spectacles,” said Mayor Morero. “It also promoted cycling as an eco-friendly, healthy, and practical means of mobility, aligning with our commitment to building a sustainable city.”

The 97km route offered cyclists a demanding yet scenic metropolitan loop through some of Johannesburg’s most iconic areas. Starting at FNB Stadium in Nasrec, riders cycled along the Soweto Highway, Main Reef Road, and Sandton’s elevated routes, before passing through Woodmead, Rivonia, and the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit.

The course also highlighted key landmarks such as the Jukskei River rehabilitation site and the Nelson Mandela Bridge — symbolically linking the City’s north and south areas.

The race concluded in thrilling fashion as Jaedon Terlouw claimed victory in the men’s category in 02:09:56. In the women’s race, Kim Le Court took first place in 02:37:26.

Mayor Morero commended all participants, particularly those who travelled from outside the City, describing the route as “a masterful showcase of Joburg’s urban sprawl — demanding, scenic, and strategically designed”.

“We look forward to welcoming cyclists again in future editions,” he concluded, “as we continue to position Johannesburg as a true world-class African City.”
